Careers
The Marine Corps structures its jobs into three distinct career lanes: enlisted, officer, and warrant officer. Each lane uses different accession rules, different screening standards, and different career progressions. Knowing which lane you are actually researching before you compare individual jobs will save you from comparing paths that have nothing in common.
The Three Career Lanes
Enlisted
Enlisted Marines are the operational backbone of every unit. They enlist directly from civilian life, complete Boot Camp at MCRD San Diego or Parris Island, and are assigned a Military Occupational Specialty based on their ASVAB scores, the needs of the Marine Corps, and available contract slots. Most enlisted careers begin as a first-term commitment of four years.
There are 41 active enlisted occupational fields covering everything from infantry and reconnaissance to aviation maintenance, intelligence, cyber, logistics, engineering, and administration.

Officer
Officers are commissioned leaders who command units, lead operations, and hold legal authority over enlisted Marines in their command. Commissioning routes include OCS, NROTC, PLC, and the Naval Academy. All ground and support officers attend The Basic School before MOS assignment. Aviation officers require an air contract before commissioning and complete a separate flight training pipeline.
There are 39 active officer occupational fields, ranging from ground combat arms to aviation, intelligence, law, and technical specialist communities.

Warrant Officer
Warrant officers are technical experts who occupy the space between senior enlisted Marines and commissioned officers. They are typically selected from within the active-duty force after establishing a specialty, not recruited directly from civilian life. Career paths span aviation maintenance, intelligence, law enforcement, engineer support, finance, and communications.

How to Use This Section
Start with the lane that matches your situation:
- Considering enlistment: go to the enlisted hub to compare mission areas and the MOS assignment process
- Pursuing a commission: go to the officer hub to compare fields and understand the TBS-to-MOS pipeline
- Active-duty Marine considering a warrant program: go to the warrant hub for selection criteria and specialty comparisons
- Comparing enlisted vs. officer paths: the Enlisted vs. Officer guide covers the differences in obligation, pay, authority, and long-term trajectory
Test Prep and Accession Guides
MOS eligibility starts with your ASVAB scores. Use the ASVAB guide and PiCAT guide before you lock in a field. Officers pursuing aviation need the ASTB-E guide. For the process side, How to Enlist and How to Become an Officer cover the accession steps after you know what you are aiming for.
