06 Communications

Marine Corps OccFld 06 is the field that keeps units connected. It covers the Marines who build, run, secure, and troubleshoot the communications systems that support command and control in garrison and in the field.

It follows the FY2026 field structure and current PMOS names rather than older recruiter shorthand that grouped many jobs under looser radio or data labels.

The marines.com 06-field resource page says Marines in the communications field design, install, connect, and operate communication networks and information systems. The current NAVMC 1200.1L MOS Manual adds that the field includes the design, installation, interconnection, operation, and defense of networks for secure, non-secure, and coalition information exchange in tactical and garrison environments.

That is a good way to think about 06 as a whole. Some jobs in the field focus more on transmissions and expeditionary communications. Others lean harder into switching, routing, operating systems, or unified communications. They all exist to keep information moving where commanders need it.

Choose 0621 Transmissions System Operator if you configure the radio stack before the battalion moves.

Choose 0631 Network Administrator if you own the routing table.

Choose 0671 Data Systems Administrator if you get the call at 0130 because active directory is down and nobody can log into the command post systems.

Common Entry Requirements

All enlisted Marines in this occupational field enlist with a minimum AFQT of 31, a high school diploma, U.S. citizenship, and MEPS medical clearance. Boot Camp is the first training gate: 13 weeks at MCRD San Diego or Parris Island. After graduation, Marines complete Marine Combat Training or the Infantry Training Battalion before attending their MOS-specific school.
