Miscellaneous MOS Codes in the Marine Corps

The NAVMC 1200.1L MOS Manual includes occupational fields that do not represent actual career paths. These codes exist for administrative tracking and internal Marine Corps purposes. Marines do not enlist or commission into these fields.

What Are Miscellaneous Requirement MOS Codes?

Miscellaneous Requirement MOS codes are administrative designations used within the Marine Corps MOS structure. They serve tracking, reporting, and administrative functions rather than defining a specific job or career specialty.

When you look at the official MOS Manual, you will see occupational fields numbered in the 80s and 90s range. These are not career fields you can choose during enlistment or commissioning. They are internal administrative tools.

Enlisted Miscellaneous Fields (OccFld 80-89)

The enlisted MOS manual includes several OccFld designations in the 80-89 range:

OccFldDesignationPurpose
80Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
81Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
82Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
84Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
86Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
87Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
88Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation
89Miscellaneous RequirementAdministrative tracking designation

None of these fields contain actual MOS codes that a Marine can hold as a primary, secondary, or additional MOS. They exist in the manual’s structure for administrative completeness.

Officer Reporting MOS (OccFld 97)

OccFld 97 is a reporting and administrative tracking designation in the officer MOS structure. Like the enlisted miscellaneous fields, it does not represent a career path or job specialty.

Why Do These Codes Exist?

The Marine Corps uses the MOS Manual as a comprehensive reference document. Including these administrative designations ensures the manual covers the full MOS numbering system, even for codes that serve internal purposes rather than defining actual jobs.

These codes may be used for:

  • Internal reporting and data management
  • Tracking Marines in transitional or administrative statuses
  • Administrative completeness in the MOS numbering system
  • Historical MOS code preservation

What This Means for Applicants

If you are considering Marine Corps service, you can safely ignore these occupational fields. They are not career options, and you will not encounter them during the enlistment or commissioning process.

Focus your research on the actual career fields that match your interests and qualifications. The enlisted MOS fields range from 01 through 79, with each field representing a genuine career specialty with defined training, duties, and advancement paths.
