Marine Corps Officer Jobs

Marine Corps officer MOS codes are not simply the enlisted fields with higher rank attached. Some align closely with a specific enlisted community. An infantry officer leads the same fight as an enlisted infantryman, but through different training and authority. Others exist almost entirely at the planning, staff, command, technical-management, or aviation-qualification level with no direct enlisted counterpart.

There are 32 officer MOS profiles on this site. Understanding how they differ from each other is the right starting point before you choose a commissioning path.

How Officer MOS Assignment Works

Officers do not negotiate an MOS contract at enlistment the way enlisted Marines do. The typical path is: commissioning source (OCS, NROTC, PLC, or Naval Academy) → The Basic School (TBS) → MOS assignment. MOS selection at TBS is competitive and based on class standing, needs of the Marine Corps, and the candidate’s stated preferences. Needs of the Marine Corps carries significant weight.

Aviation officers follow a separate pipeline. Selection for an air contract typically happens before commissioning and requires passing the ASTB-E. See the ASTB-E guide and How to Become an Officer for the commissioning side of this.

What to Compare Before Choosing a Field

Officer research comes down to a different set of questions than enlisted research:

  • Aviation or ground? Aviation officers go through a separate accession pipeline and need an air contract before TBS. Ground and support officers select MOS at TBS.
  • How technical is the field? Some communities (ground electronics, CBRN, EOD) require deep technical follow-on schooling after TBS. Others are primarily leadership and staff roles.
  • What does post-TBS progression look like? Some fields offer broad career flexibility; others are narrow specialist tracks.
