Qualification Gates

Both jobs require U.S. citizenship, an active-duty AFQT minimum of 31 for high school diploma holders, and SCI eligibility before the MOS is awarded.

ASVAB and Line Scores

The 0231 Intelligence Specialist has no published standalone line-score minimum. The 0211 field adds gates that 0231 does not require:

• Counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination before attending the MAGTF CI/HUMINT Course
• Age requirement: applicant must be at least 21 before graduating the course
• Service obligation: 60 months of obligated service begins upon lateral move approval
• Valid U.S. driver’s license
• Worldwide deployability confirmation

The polygraph places 0211 in a different screening tier than 0231. The background investigation for SCI plus a CI polygraph examines conduct and financial history in detail. A clean record is non-negotiable.

Training Path

Both paths flow through Boot Camp and then diverge at the MOS school level.

Both MOS schools are at the same campus: Marine Corps Intelligence Schools in Dam Neck, Virginia. The courses are separate programs with different content and different prerequisite timelines.

0231 School and Award

For 0231, the MOS is awarded at the end of the MAGTF Intelligence Specialist Entry Course. The course covers all-source analysis, intelligence production, targeting basics, and database management. A direct-accession Marine enters this path from Boot Camp and MCT, with no prior MOS required.

0211 School and Award

For 0211, the school is the endpoint of a multi-month or multi-year process. A Marine builds a lateral-move package, passes a suitability review, clears a polygraph, and waits for a school seat. The timeline from initial interest to the school seat is typically several months to over a year.

The MOS is awarded at the end of the MAGTF CI/HUMINT Course, which covers source operations, interrogation doctrine, collection management, report writing, and CI fundamentals.

Both MOSs offer advanced training after the initial course:

• 0231 advanced options: joint targeting courses, Defense Intelligence Agency analytic programs, language training through the Defense Language Institute, geospatial intelligence and imagery exploitation courses.
• 0211 advanced options: Technical Surveillance Countermeasures Technician Course, SERE for applicable operational billets, joint HUMINT training with DIA or Army HUMINT schools, advanced collection management and targeting courses.

DLI language billets are available to both fields for selected assignments. The specific course availability depends on command need and school seat timing, not purely individual preference.

What Each Marine Does Daily

The shared field masks meaningful differences in daily work. Both MOSs spend significant time writing, managing classified databases, and briefing commanders. The core mission diverges on collection method.

The All-Source Analyst

An 0231 Marine fuses reporting from organic and external sources, analyzes enemy order of battle and likely courses of action, and produces written intelligence products for the commander. The job is creating the picture from inputs that others have collected.

Daily tasks at a battalion intelligence section look different from those at a MEF intelligence section, but the core activities are consistent:

• Collecting and organizing raw intelligence reporting from multiple sources
• Analyzing enemy disposition, order of battle, and likely courses of action
• Producing written assessments, threat summaries, and targeting support documents
• Briefing commanders and staff on current intelligence at all levels
• Maintaining classified databases, maps, and tracking systems
• Supporting operational planning with intelligence preparation of the battlefield

The work is information-intensive and computer-dependent. Systems are classified, but the job consistently requires strong reading comprehension, typing accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple software environments simultaneously.

The CI/HUMINT Specialist

An 0211 Marine collects information through direct human contact and counters foreign intelligence threats to the force. The job is managing sources and protecting the command from penetration.

In a deployed context, daily tasks include:

• Planning and conducting source meetings, debriefings, and screenings
• Writing intelligence reports using standardized formats and classification procedures
• Identifying and countering foreign intelligence activities targeting Marine personnel
• Coordinating with NCIS, other intelligence agencies, and interagency partners
• Analyzing raw human intelligence reporting and producing finished products for commanders
• Maintaining detailed operational files and supporting legal requirements for collection

The 0211 field operates in small teams with significant autonomy. A CI/HUMINT Marine in a deployed environment may make operational decisions with limited immediate supervision. That autonomy is screened for explicitly during selection and is not available to junior Marines who have not yet established a track record.

Work Setting and Deployment

Both MOSs work in secure environments in garrison and deploy with operational units. The daily setting and deployment structure differ in ways that matter when you are deciding which path fits your tolerance for schedule unpredictability and travel tempo.

0231 Work Setting

An 0231 Marine typically works inside a SCIF in garrison and a hardened command post or tactical operations center in the field. Intelligence sections stand continuous watch during operational periods, which means shift work, weekend duty, and extended hours during high-tempo exercises and deployments.

Garrison periods are more predictable but still include continuous coverage requirements. The watch schedule is the primary rhythm of daily life for an intelligence analyst, and it shapes personal plans more consistently than a standard Monday-to-Friday billet would.

0211 Work Setting

An 0211 Marine shifts between office, fieldwork, and fully operational deployed settings depending on the billet. CI/HUMINT work in deployed environments can involve source meetings outside the wire and operational requirements that arrive without advance notice.

The tempo is high in a different way than an infantry billet. The demands are cognitive and interpersonal rather than physical, but the hours can be irregular and the operational stakes are real. A CI/HUMINT Marine may go weeks with a predictable schedule and then face a sustained period of unannounced requirements.

Duty Stations and Deployment Patterns

Primary duty station options for both MOSs are similar:

• Camp Pendleton, Camp Lejeune, Quantico, and Kaneohe Bay for standard MAGTF intelligence billets
• Various intelligence battalion locations for specialized assignments
• Overseas billets in Japan, South Korea, and Europe for 0231 analysts, with 0211 Marines at various overseas MAGTF support locations

Choose it if you want to work with large volumes of reporting, find patterns across multiple sources, and produce written assessments that shape command decisions. The direct-accession path means you can contract for intelligence from the recruiting station.

• Best fit: reads widely, writes clearly, stays calm under deadline pressure, motivated by understanding complex problems, comfortable working in a secure information-rich environment.
• Poor fit: needs visible, immediate, physical results from work, struggles with sustained concentration on written material, finds classification and documentation requirements tedious.

0211 CI/HUMINT Specialist

Choose it if you want high-stakes work that tests judgment, are comfortable conducting interviews and managing sources under pressure, and already have a Marine track record to bring to the lateral move package.

• Best fit: mature NCO with excellent interpersonal skills, strong written communication, emotional stability, ability to maintain composure in sensitive and ambiguous situations, clean conduct and financial record.
• Poor fit: Marines who need constant physical action, dislike documentation-heavy work, struggle with ambiguity, or have conduct or financial issues that a polygraph and background investigation will surface.

If both still appeal, clear the ASVAB line-score thresholds first. GT 105 and CL 105 keep the 0211 door open for a lateral move later while 0231 remains accessible from the start. Build those scores with the ASVAB study guide before committing to a contract.
