A GT of 110 or higher is required before any other part of the 0241 application proceeds. There is no alternate composite path as there is for some other MOSs in the intelligence field.

Vision and Medical Standards

The 0241 MOS adds a physical qualification that 0231 does not require. Normal color vision and normal stereoscopic acuity are required for 0241 and are confirmed by a medical officer at MEPS and at the MOS medical evaluation.

Stereoscopic acuity is the ability to perceive depth from two-dimensional imagery. It is required because extracting accurate spatial data from photographs and sensor feeds depends on the analyst’s visual system functioning correctly. A candidate who fails the color vision or stereoscopic acuity standard cannot qualify for 0241 regardless of ASVAB score.

The 0231 field has no published vision requirement beyond the standard military entrance screening.

Clearance and Lateral Move Screening

Both MOSs require SCI eligibility. The Single Scope Background Investigation supporting SCI clearance is initiated during the application process for both direct-accession and lateral-move applicants.

Lateral movers into 0241 must complete a field interview and receive a recommendation from an 0241 Gunnery Sergeant or Master Sergeant. They must also have 36 months of obligated service remaining after MOS training and be within the authorized rank window: typically Corporal or below, with Sergeants considered only in exceptional cases.

Lateral movers into 0231 require a face-to-face interview and a recommendation from an 0231 Gunnery Sergeant or above.

The ASVAB is the upstream gate for both MOSs, and GT 110 is the hard floor for 0241. Build the score first with the ASVAB study guide, then address clearance processing and medical requirements in sequence.

Training Path

Both pipelines begin identically, with Boot Camp and Marine Combat Training, then diverge at the MOS school level. Both MOS schools are at the same installation.

The course works directly with the classified exploitation systems and geographic information software that 0241 Marines use in the fleet. A direct-accession Marine also arrives from Boot Camp and MCT.

Both MOSs offer advanced training after the initial course. For 0241, advanced options include National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency imagery analysis courses, joint targeting and battle damage assessment courses, geospatial intelligence integration training, and advanced exploitation techniques for new sensor platforms. The training length difference is worth factoring in. The 0231 path and the 0241 path both start the same day from Boot Camp, but the specific course durations at Dam Neck differ. Both produce Marines who are cleared and trained before they report to the fleet.

The shared field and shared schoolhouse location can make these two jobs look similar from the outside. The daily work is different enough that a wrong choice is a real professional mismatch.

The All-Source Analyst

An 0231 Marine collects and fuses reporting from organic and external sources, analyzes enemy disposition and likely courses of action, and produces written intelligence products for the commander. The job is creating a text-based picture from inputs that sensors, human sources, and signals have collected.

Daily tasks at a battalion intelligence section include:

The Imagery Intelligence Specialist

An 0241 Marine exploits imagery from satellite, airborne, and unmanned aircraft system platforms, identifies targets and military equipment, assesses battle damage, and produces imagery intelligence reports that support MAGTF operations. The job is producing spatial intelligence from visual data.

Daily tasks include:

• Exploiting multi-spectral imagery using specialized software on classified exploitation workstations
• Producing imagery intelligence reports including target nominations, battle damage assessments, and terrain analysis
• Identifying military equipment, installations, and activities from imagery
• Using photogrammetry tools to calculate position, height, and physical characteristics of objects
• Coordinating with all-source analysts to integrate imagery findings into broader intelligence products
• Maintaining imagery libraries and databases for ongoing operations

The work is visual and technically precise. Imagery analysts work at high-resolution monitors in SCIFs and imagery exploitation cells. Errors in spatial data have direct operational consequences, so individual accuracy is treated as non-negotiable from the first assignment.

Work Setting and Deployment

Both MOSs work in secure environments in garrison and deploy with operational units. The daily setting shares similarities, but the system access and the nature of the analytical output differ.

0231 Work Setting

An 0231 Marine works inside a SCIF in garrison and a hardened command post or tactical operations center in the field. Intelligence sections stand continuous watch during operational periods, which means shift work, weekend duty, and extended hours during high-tempo exercises and deployments.

Primary assignments are at Camp Pendleton, Camp Lejeune, Quantico, Kaneohe Bay, and various intelligence battalion locations. Overseas billets exist in Japan, South Korea, and Europe for qualified analysts.

0241 Work Setting

An 0241 Marine works primarily inside SCIFs and imagery exploitation cells. In garrison, the workspace is climate-controlled and computer-intensive. In deployed environments, it is typically a hardened tactical operations center or expeditionary SCIF.

0241 Imagery Intelligence Specialist

Choose it if you have strong visual perception, enjoy spatial problem-solving, and want to produce precise intelligence from sensor data rather than written reporting. The GT 110 floor and vision standards must be cleared before anything else proceeds.

• Best fit: strong visual perception, enjoys spatial problem-solving, produces accurate work under deadline pressure, comfortable with screen-intensive analysis in a structured technical environment, wants a specialty with direct civilian career application in geospatial and remote sensing fields.
• Poor fit: fails the color vision or stereoscopic acuity standard, scores below GT 110, finds screen-intensive work fatiguing, or prefers more physical or outdoor assignments.
