Neither job is a feeder for the other. A 1371 Combat Engineer does not automatically become a better 1345 operator, and a 1345 operator is not a less dangerous version of 1371. They are separate vocations inside the same occupational field.
Both pull from the same OccFld 13 contract pool, both deploy with engineer battalions, and both spend their careers in the same field environments at Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton. What Each Marine Actually Does
The shared OccFld label covers a wider range of work than most outsiders expect. The common thread is that both jobs support the ability of Marine units to move, build, and fight in the field. What changes is how each Marine contributes to that mission.
The Combat Engineer Role
The 1371 Combat Engineer executes the four traditional engineer missions: mobility, counter-mobility, survivability, and general engineering. The work is field-forward and often happens in direct proximity to the maneuver force.
On a mobility mission, the team breeches wire obstacles, clears minefields, and opens routes so infantry and armor can advance. On a counter-mobility mission, the team emplaces anti-tank barriers, wire obstacles, and mined areas to slow the enemy. On survivability work, the team builds fighting positions, berms, and hardened structures that protect Marines in fixed positions.
The technology the 1371 Marine works with includes C-4, TNT, detonating cord, blasting caps, time fuze, and electric firing systems. It also includes the M58 Mine Clearing Line Charge, mine rollers, and assault breaching gear. Demolitions are central to the MOS, and that comes with a specific professional accountability:
- Every live demolitions operation requires a qualified supervisor and officer-in-charge oversight.

The Equipment Operator Role
The 1345 Engineer Equipment Operator runs heavy construction and engineer equipment to accomplish mobility and construction missions. The primary platforms include D7 and D9 series bulldozers, 130G motor graders, 621G and 631E elevating scrapers, and 988 wheel loaders, plus rough terrain forklifts and compactors.
A working day in the fleet starts before anything moves. The operator conducts a walkaround inspection: fluids, tracks or tires, hydraulic lines, blade or bucket connections. Equipment faults go on the work order sheet before the machine rolls.
Once tasked, the operator focuses on precise machine control: reading grade stakes, positioning the blade, moving earth to the required standard on the required timeline.
The work outputs are concrete and visible: a graded landing zone that a CH-53 can set down on, a route cleared through a debris field, a hardened position completed before the unit moves. Precision matters because a poor grade means more passes, more fuel, and a later finish:
- Operating bulldozers, motor graders, scrapers, and wheel loaders in support of construction and engineer missions.
- Performing operator-level preventive maintenance checks and services before, during, and after every operation.
- Coordinating with section leaders on task sequencing and equipment positioning.
- Maintaining equipment logs, fuel records, and operator-level documentation.

Qualification Gates
This is where the two contracts look nearly identical and then diverge on what the score actually tests. Both 1371 and 1345 use the same ASVAB composite, the same minimum, and the same AFQT floor.
The score does not separate the contracts. The mission and the accountability do.
Both MOSs require:
- AFQT minimum of 31 for active-duty high school diploma holders, 50 for GED holders.

No Academic Hierarchy Between Contracts
There is no separate line-score gate above MM 100 that creates a qualification hierarchy between 1371 and 1345. A Marine who clears MM 100 is eligible for either contract. The choice is vocational, not academic.
What 1371 does add is an explosives-related disqualification screen. Certain felony convictions, particularly those involving explosives, are specifically disqualifying for the combat engineer MOS. The security clearance is not required at the basic 1371 level, but the explosives background check is part of the accession process.
Neither MOS requires a security clearance at the basic entry level. Both require passing the standard MEPS medical examination and meeting the Marine Corps physical and medical standards. The age range for enlistment is 17 to 28.
Building the MM Composite
Understanding how MM is built gives you a practical study target before you take the ASVAB. AR tests your ability to reason through math problems stated in words. MC tests your ability to understand mechanical systems, force, leverage, and gears.
AS tests your knowledge of automotive systems and workshop tools. EI tests basic electronics knowledge. Marines with a background in shop class, construction work, or machinery tend to score higher on MC and AS without additional preparation.

Training Path
Both pipelines begin identically. The split happens at MOS School, where the two jobs attend separate courses, train on different equipment and skills, and receive separate MOS designations.

Both MOSs attend the same MOS School location at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. The courses run concurrently in separate tracks. Total pipeline from enlistment to first fleet assignment runs approximately six to eight months for both.
At the 1371 course, students learn explosive theory, charge calculation and placement for breaching and destruction missions, detonating cord and blasting cap procedures, mine recognition and clearance, obstacle construction, and field fortification work. 1345 Equipment Operator Course
At the 1345 course, students learn safe equipment operating procedures, earthmoving theory, platform-specific operation on dozers and graders representative of the Marine Corps fleet, PMCS procedures, and equipment recovery and documentation. Real operating proficiency builds from seat time in the fleet.
The MOS is awarded at the end of the respective course. Neither school is a continuation of the other. They run in parallel tracks and produce Marines qualified for entirely different billets.
Both fields open advanced courses after the fleet. Combat engineers can compete for the Sapper Leader Course at Fort Leonard Wood, explosive hazard awareness courses, and breacher certifications.
Equipment operators can pursue additional platform certifications, CDL acquisition, and cross-training on adjacent machines. Those opportunities come after the MOS and the first unit.
Work Setting and Daily Demands
Both MOSs are physical and field-oriented. Neither is a garrison desk job. What changes is the type of demand and where it comes from.
Physical Load
The 1371 Combat Engineer carries engineer loads in the field: demolitions materials, tools, individual combat gear, and sometimes bridging or breaching components. During demolitions training and obstacle emplacement, the work involves low-crawling, digging, lifting, and positioning charges under time pressure. The pre-deployment training pipeline before a MEU float compresses into sustained demanding periods.
The 1345 Engineer Equipment Operator faces different physical demands. Extended periods in the operator cab with significant vibration exposure, climbing on and off large equipment multiple times per shift, and conducting walkaround inspections and PMCS tasks including fluid checks and filter changes. Running a dozer or grader for eight consecutive hours in summer at Twentynine Palms is exhausting in a way that differs from infantry physical demand but is just as real.
Both MOSs run the same PFT and CFT standards. Neither carries lighter fitness requirements than the other.
The physical demand profile in 1371 concentrates more on carrying loads and working in protective gear near hazards. The demand profile in 1345 concentrates on sustained focus during long machine operation cycles, climbing and descending equipment multiple times per shift, and conducting physical PMCS in field conditions including heat, cold, and dust.
Marines who enter either MOS expecting a lighter physical day than infantry will be wrong. The difference is in what the physical demand asks of your body, not in whether it asks.
Duty Stations
Both MOSs concentrate at the same major installations, because combat engineer battalions and engineer support battalions are co-located at I MEF and II MEF:
- Camp Lejeune, North Carolina: 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion (1371 Marines) and 8th Engineer Support Battalion (1345 Marines).
- Camp Pendleton, California: 1st Combat Engineer Battalion (1371 Marines) and 7th Engineer Support Battalion (1345 Marines).
- MCAGCC Twentynine Palms, California: combined arms exercise rotations for both MOSs.

A 1345 Engineer Equipment Operator leaves active duty with certifications, seat time on specific platforms, and a background that civilian construction employers immediately recognize. The path from Marine operator to civilian construction equipment operator requires no translation. Adding a CDL or pursuing the IUOE apprenticeship program post-service moves earnings significantly above national median figures, particularly in urban construction markets.
A 1371 Combat Engineer leaves with technical experience in demolitions, obstacle systems, and field construction that does not map directly onto a civilian job title the way heavy-equipment operator does. The transfer requires either post-service education in construction management or civil engineering technology, or a route through DoD contractor positions where the engineer background is understood without translation.
Neither path is a dead end. They require different post-service planning.
Which One Fits You
Both jobs demand the MM 100 score, physical fitness, and a clean record. The score does not separate them. The choice is about what kind of engineer work you want to do and what you want to build toward after service.
1371 Combat Engineer
Choose 1371 if you want the field-forward engineer identity and you are drawn specifically to the demolitions, breaching, and obstacle work that happens in direct proximity to the maneuver force.
- Best fit: technically motivated, comfortable with the accountability that comes with explosives qualifications, want to operate close to the fight, and are willing to invest in post-service education to translate the experience into civilian engineering roles.
- Poor fit: you want a trade career with a clean civilian transition, dislike the cumulative physical demands of demolitions and obstacle construction, or underestimate the safety responsibility that comes with NCO rank in this MOS.
1345 Engineer Equipment Operator
Choose 1345 if you want to operate heavy machinery, take pride in the visible results of construction and earthmoving work, and want a civilian trade career that requires no translation gap.
- Best fit: likes operating machinery and takes genuine pride in precise machine control, wants a skill that transfers directly into a construction or heavy-equipment trade, accepts the daily PMCS and maintenance cycle as part of the job.
- Poor fit: you want the combat-engineer identity with demolitions and breaching work, prefer close integration with infantry maneuver forces, or find sustained equipment maintenance tedious.
If the mission still sounds similar, ask yourself one question: do you want to be working on explosives and obstacles near the infantry, or grading earth and cutting landing zones behind a machine? That answer points to the right contract.
One other signal worth noting: if you want the most direct civilian-to-military trade match, 1345 is the contract. If you want the field identity that comes with the combat engineer community and you are willing to invest in post-service education to make the background competitive in civilian engineering roles, 1371 is the contract.
Both are good choices for the right Marine. The goal is to pick the one that fits the career you actually want, not the one that sounds more impressive when you describe it to someone who does not know the difference.
